The King of Love

Here is a second hymn that's been on my mind. Funnily enough like the previous hymn this hymn is also based on Psalm 23. I've especially been loving verses 3 & 4.

The King of Love
Henry W. Baker (1821-1877)
Columbia Tune

The King of love my Shepherd is,
Whose goodness faileth never,
I nothing lack if I am His
And He is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow
My ransomed soul He leadeth,
And where the verdant pastures grow,
With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
But yet in love He sought me,
And on His shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
With Thee, dear Lord, beside me;
Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
Thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight;
Thy unction grace bestoweth;
And O what transport of delight
From Thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days
Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise
Within Thy house forever.

  1. Lorelai, does your church do the traditional arrangement of these, or a new one? And if new, do you know where I could find a recording?

  2. Kim, I believe with the hymns I've posted so far the tune and arrangement is traditional. There are some hymns (for instance, The Sands of Time are Sinking, Dear Refuge of My Weary Soul) that we sing to a modern tune that someone else, even sometimes that a current church member has written. We sing with the accompaniment of a piano, a guitar and 4 vocalists. I've included links in each post so far that take you to a YouTube video that contains the melody we sing at church. I can text you the song sheets of these songs so you can read the music if you'd like.
